Yorkies are one of the world’s smallest dogs. Although their origins are uncertain, many experts believe they were probably developed by the working men of North England who bred them to catch rats in the mine shafts. They were also used in hunting to penetrate into fox and badger burrows. The first Yorkies were much bigger than the tiny dogs we see today. They were made into a fashion dog by selective breeding throughout the years.
Besides their obvious small size Yorkshire Terriers are eager sweet natured dogs. They are very energetic and adventurous. They are also known to be very intelligent, cunning and stubborn. This explains why they may be hard to house break. Although, most Yorkies are less than 7 lbs, don’t be fooled! This tiny dog can pack a powerful punch. The Yorkie is known to be a great watch dog and may snap is surprised or provoked.
Some Yorkies, like many smaller dogs, are prone to early tooth decay. Feeding them dry food can help keep their teeth strong and healthy. Also, although the “teacup” sizes are all the rage, they are prone to having serious behavior and health problems.
All in all, these tiny characters can catch a mouse, defend a home and be a fashionista all in the same day.

Looking for a reason to quit smoking? The effects of smoking are widely known. It is a fact that smoking causes heart disease, strokes and contributes to a number of cancers. One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Basically, smoking inevitably leads to death. It’s just that simple. What isn’t as widely known is that smoking can also harm your pets as well. In fact, people who smoke could be putting their pets as risk of getting cancer.
Unfortunately, your cat may be most at risk of the developing a preventable disease from your smoking habit. That can develop Feline Lymphoma and Oral Cancer from your second hand smoke. Since cats often groom themselves diligently, cats in smoking households can lick up carcinogens that have been deposited on their fur. Daily grooming over a long period of time can expose the delicate skin in the mouth to hazardous amounts of carcinogens causing Oral Cancer. In addition, the lymph nodes filter the blood, inhaled or ingested carcinogens can build up in these structures, causing Feline Lymphoma. This type of cancer kills three out of every four cats every year.
Man’s best friend is not out of harms way either. In dogs, second hand smoke may cause Nasal Sinus Cancer and in more serious cases Lung Cancer. A study at Colorado State found a higher incidence of nasal cavity tumors in dogs exposed to second hand smoke than in dogs that live in non-smoking households.
These days, pets mean more to some than children. They are extremely loyal and ask for nothing but love in return. Americans spent 34 billion dollars last year to pamper our most beloved pets, while ignoring an overwhelming preventable problem. If your health and the health of the others around you can not persuade you to quit the nasty habit maybe your helpless furry companion can.

It is no secret that dogs like to bark, but sometimes it becomes so much that it can hurt relationships with neighbors. This can lead to serious issues such as fines or even lawsuits. Knowing the cause of the excessive barking can go along way to helping solve the problem. Some common causes include:
1)Separation Anxiety
2)Territorial Issues
3)Lack of Activity
Separation anxiety is a major cause of distress for dogs and can lead to such unwanted behaviors such as excessive barking or possibly even aggression. What happens is that the dog comes to depend on it’s master’s presence to be comforted. In the “wolf pack” mentality, the dog is part of a pack consisting of the owner and family. When the dog is left alone, this is like being abandoned by the pack. The dog must learn that his owners will return.
Territorial issues often cause excessive barking. Dogs think that the back alley or side road are all part of their territory and that anyone passing by is intruding and trying to hurt their pack. So, they bark like crazy. This type of barking can cause the most strain between neighbors and so should be corrected as soon as possible.
Lack of activity will frustrate any dog. Dogs are meant to run and play in the open, and often people forget this. Let your dog run and play.

What's Hot this Season: New Trends in Dog Clothing
Posted by Grant at 8:05 AM Wednesday, August 09, 2006It used to be the hot thing to dress parent and child alike. This day and age, however, the child being dressed is four-legged and furry. The younger generation is having less children and satisfying their parental desires with pampered pooches. So, there are a large number of people looking to spoil their dogs and themselves by dishing out the dough on designer dog clothes. Just like human clothing, dog clothing designs get their inspiration on runways around the world and lead many different styles and colors to be the in thing this season.
The inventive colors and designs on models in Milan, Paris and New York have found their way into dog clothing boutiques around the world. Designers have only a short time after the human fashion shows to develop their new lines to go along with what the parents will be wearing. “The dog version of clothing must not only match human styles, it must also be functional for the dog” said Onika Carroll, a designer for Elizabeth Austin. All of these challenges lead to a varied array of dog clothing ranging from the cute and simple to the haute couture.
The different styles that are in this season include an assortment of day and evening wear as well as beach wear. Longer dresses and even ball gowns are going to be hot thanks to the popularity of the TV show “Dancing with the Stars”. The good news for retailers is and customers is that there is a wide variety of gowns and dresses to fit anyone’s taste. Colors like pink, lilac and lime green are strong this season, and polka dots and floral designs are prominent as well. Another fashion choice that should be popular is having sequins or appliqués of hearts and butterflies. Pooch parents want their girl dogs to be dainty and their boy dogs to be cool or tough. A very popular print this season for boys and some girls is anything camouflage. The bottom line is, there’s going to be plenty for everyone to choose what style fits them and their baby best.
